Music Notes:

Allman Brothers: Live New Year's 1973

Triple cd bootleg. Some of the jams get a bit messy and lose focus but some transcendence can be found. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is especially tasty here. Some later tracks feature Jerry Garcia. We skipped a bunch of tracks trying to hit the highlights.

Funkadelic: One Nation Under a Groove  (1978)

Play something funky was the request. Who says a rock fan cant dig a funk band?

Final Tally:

Game Notes:
  • "Did I mention that it's a bootleg? A bootleg!"
  • "Is it wrong that it should taste like margarine?"

Music Notes:

Quintessential and essential, Leonard's first album.
Super funky. Meters-style. Recorded by a bunch of kids (all under 18) who solicited the soul-shouting singer Joe Henry to sing on some tracks. All have gone on to other bands (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, who happen to be coming to Jazzfest this year BTW, is one of those bands).
Brilliant bluegrass album here. Widely acknowledged as the best of the year. Combining folk-star Steve Earle's singer-songwriting with the fastest, tightest working bluegrass band around.
Great sound quality and an amazing performance by Van and his band (Jack Straw on saxophone!). You know all the tracks but the arrangements are a little different, in interesting ways, from the versions you are familiar with.
Another bootleg. This one came my way courtesy of my pal Bill. Thanks Bill! I had to downgrade the tracks from flac to mp3 but the quality remains. Nice show from the early eighties. Starts with a smoking Feel Like A Stranger and it's nice to hear Brent's keys and his voice singing along with Jerry and Bob. Other highlights: China-Rider, Eyes and Stella Blue.
