Gamer Rating and Notes from K:
The game of the year appears to have been Terraforming Mars, which accounted for 10 of the 88 games we played in 2017. Next highest was Terra Mystica with 8 times played.
We also introduced ourselves to a number of new goodies during 2017, including:
· Clans of Caledonia
 |
cumulative gamer rating |
· Concordia
· Isle of Skye
· Key to the City: London
· Lisboa
· Navegador
· Quebec
· World’s Fair 1893
There was the obligatory cottage festivities, this year in April, with several of us able to grab a win here or there (2 wins apiece for G, K and Z, and 1 win apiece for M and W….sorry J). But G was the clear victor of this year’s cottage trip, never finishing below 2nd place in any of the games he played (impressive!).
We were fortunate enough to have old friends become new again, with a post-Canada Day visit from Simon (who even managed to win a game of Imperial 2030 while he was here).
We managed to convince our better halves into letting us have 13 ad hoc nights in addition to our regular games this year, and we slipped in an extra 18 games on those ad hoc nights. Well done, boys!
There was also much whinging about how the Gamer Rate stats still needed some tinkering, as they didn’t account for the fact that some games are longer and/or more complex than others, and therefore should be more heavily weighted in the GR percentages. Well gentlemen, you complain, and I respond….I’ve taken the Complexity rating from BGG (as of today), and I have also taken the max game length from BGG (as of today), and determined the average complexity and average max playing time for the games we’ve played. I then determined each game’s complexity and max playing time in comparison with those averages. I then assigned a two thirds weighting to the complexity percentage vs. the average, and a one third weighting to the max playing time percentage vs. the average, in order to calculate an overall percentage factor for each game (done by Game Family, not be each different game variant). I then built this factor into the Gamer Rate stats, and recalculated the whole darn thing. For those who are curious, the largest overall factor is for Caverna (154% of base points are awarded), and the smallest overall factor is for 8 Minute Empire (44% of base points are awarded). The end result of all this madness, is actually not that different from what we already had, but it did benefit G and Z a fair bit, and it also tightened up the race at the bottom of the table a little bit. Even though this change hasn’t shown too favourably on me, I actually prefer it. In part because it indeed was weird that a 5 player game of Terra Mystica would be worth the exact same as a 5 player game of 7 Wonders. But also because it means I no longer have to listen to everybody complain about it J
So, without further ado, here’s what the new and improved Gamer Rate stats are now showing:

And so I will end this year-in-review email with a tip of the cap to G, who by all reasonably objective measures, was the clear winner for 2017. But I will remind G that he needs to stay on his toes as we move into 2018, for he’s got a couple folks nipping at his heels along the way, primed and ready to assume the throne.
GR by Complexity/Time Factor
As I suspected, G had the highest Gamer Rate % and the highest Win % in each of the 4 groupings of games by Complexity/Time Factor (except for GR% in the 80%- category, in which K was highest).
Long story short, although there are some odd variations here or there (i.e. see Z GR% in the 120%+ vs. the 80%- categories), the results when split by complexity/time factor are largely consistent with the aggregate results:

gamer Rating by chooser
And the hits just keep on coming…
I got curious over my lunch break whether people’s Gamer Rates would be different depending upon who chose the game. A quick pivot table and some formulas later, after removing “Other” from the picture, and here you have it (doesn’t show # of plays, so some of these percentages could be a bit skewed if there were very few plays involved).
The highlighting is as follows:
· Green indicates your highest GR% by Game Chooser (for instance, when Si was around, he really liked it when K chose the game, as he was getting 79.6% on those games);
· Yellow indicates your lowest GR% by Game Chooser (for instance, M really doesn’t like it when W chooses the game, as M’s only at 10.3% on those games); and finally,
· Blue indicates your GR% for when you are the Game Chooser (for instance, G does the best jobs of picking games that are good for himself, as he’s at 61.6% when he chooses…on the other hand, J and M may want to rethink their game choosing strategies, as they are only managing 28.9% and 29.7%, respectively, on those games)

If you’re wondering who benefits the most and who takes the worst hit depending on who picked the game, here’s the high-level summary of the above:
· Group consensus picks, G has highest rate out of everyone (66.6%), and W has lowest (25.1%)
· G picks, G has highest rate (61.6%), J has lowest (26.8%)
· J picks, K has highest rate (78.3%), W has lowest (28.2%)
· K picks, Si has highest rate (79.6%), M has lowest (14.9%)
· M picks, K has highest rate (70.9%), M has lowest (29.7%)
· Si picks, Z has the highest rate (75.9%), M has the lowest (18.5%)
· W picks, Si has the higest rate (62.5%), M has the lowest (10.3%)
· Z picks, M has the highest rate (64.0%), J has the lowest (16.4%)
And the award for most consistent performer regardless of Game Chooser, goes to W, who only has a 17.7% difference in GR% from his least favourite Game Chooser to his favourite Game Chooser. By comparison, M has an almost 54% difference between his least favourite and favourite Game Chooser.
GR by day of the week?
I’ve added some formulas to the spreadsheet to identify the specific day of the week on which the games were played (since it isn’t as straight-forward as all ad hocs fall on Saturdays), and I’ve run the following interesting little table for your amusement.
This shows the key stats for all games we played on days other than Thursdays or Saturdays:

*note, it’s not clear from the above, but if I were to delve deeper, you’d find that I dominate on Tuesdays!
I was planning on doing a second table showing the results for just the games played on Saturdays, but I quickly decided to not even bother when I saw that, of the 23 games we’ve played on Saturdays since early 2015, G was the winner for 10 of them, and was 2nd place for another 8….so, basically, G dominates on Saturdays….
Thanks to K for the above. I think that's enough stats for now so let's get to the list of albums heard at gamenight this past year:
Augustus Pablo: King Tubby Meets Uptown Rockers (1976)
